On This Day in Christian History

Robert J. Morgan has written a very interesting book entitled On This Day in Christian History, which details specific movements, people, and martyrs who have shaped the Christian faith from its beginning.  The unique apporach to this book is that it reads as a 365 day devotional.  Each day you get a glimpse into the lives of people like Erasmus, Zwingli, Jan Huss, Isaac Watts and others.  This book would be a great addition to the daily study of the Bible, giving the reader a picture of the dynamics of Christian history alongisde the Word of God.  Secondly, this work also provides for the reader a context in which these men, women, and movements sprang from.  We need to know history in order that we don't repeat, but we also need history to see the way great men and women lived faithfully before God under great struggle and temptation.  Morgan has provided a Scripture verse on the bottom of the page as a way of combining the them of the story with the Word, another example of the unique posture of this work.  Lastly, the work gives us glimpses of people we might not have heard of in the Christian faith, and at least for me gave me encouragement to find more out about their lives.
This is also the same author of the books Then Sings My Soul.

God's Grace for All of Life

The Romance of Grace by Jim McNeely III To be honest, when I received this book in the mail I had visions of what it might be like with a title like, ‘The Romance of Grace.’  The emotional rollercoaster and one-sided perspective on how our emotions fuel our faith was my presumption about the book, but this was the furthest thing from the truth as I started reading.  The Romance of Grace by Pastor Jim McNeely III is a careful look at the movements of grace in the way God pursues us with his love and his desire to get us to love him back.  McNeely writes, “We are entering a cosmic romance with a passionate lover, and He is interested in our heart’s truest desire.  His deepest objective isn’t to make us more moral; it is to get us to love Him back.  Virtue is the fruit, not the root” (18).  Why is this helpful?  For one thing, beginning with God’s initiating grace frees us from starting out on the wrong foot in the way we tell the story and...
